Flathead academy
a Whitefish, MT Homeschool Co-op
What is Flathead Academy?
Flathead Academy was started and run by Sarah and Andrew Huska for the benefit of our 4 young children, our family friends, and the Whitefish community. For the last two years our family has been part of an Acton Academy and after moving from Texas to the Whitefish, MT area we knew without a doubt that we had to continue the Acton method. For the 2023-2024 school year we are starting Flathead Academy as a Homeschool Co-op that is using similar tools and philosophies with the goal of ultimately becoming an Acton Affiliate that continues to incorporate the local desire for Co-op support.
What are Flathead Academy's core tenants?
We are a Christian family with traditional Christian values. We raise our kids to know the Bible, put their faith in God, and give their lives to Jesus. Each day at Flathead Academy starts with Kingdom Time where we worship God, get into His Word, and pray.
We are preparing our children to be independent thinkers and team players that develop themselves and others, run businesses, and lead communities.
How does Flathead Academy work?
Our full-time Learners use hands-on resources like workbooks and Montisorri activities as well as software resources such as Lexia, Dreambox, and Kahn Academy to develop Core Skills at their own pace. Core Skills is about 6 hours per week. Each student sets their daily goals and and records their progress for each discipline. Weekly goals for the class are set by the Studio Guides to help keep Learners on track. Learners earn more freedom in setting their goals and choosing their paths as they demonstrate responsibility and progress. Full-time learners can attend in-person or they can work from their own home in the spirit of a Co-op. Learners whose family homeschool routine provides most of their disciplines can attend in-person or remotely for supplemental skills or social interaction.
In addition to Core Skills development we develop and pursue Learning Quests which are 1-6 week adventures in discovery that cover a wide range of topics in Art, Science, and Technology. This year we are preparing Quests in Botany, Geology, Meteorology, and Baking. Full-time and part-time learners are welcome to join in the Quests, and part-time learners will work with their family group to find the right balance of group and independent pursuit of the Quests.
Friday Fun Days are another great part of Flathead Academy! Fun Days are a open to anyone in the Co-op, full-time, part-time, in-person, or remote. These are days where we get together just to do fun things like hike, swim, bake, play, act, dream, or do something entirely new to us.
